<description>A proposal for the citizens of New Orleans to embrace their infrastructural necessity.

This elevated network of paths and parks mitigates flooding and subsidence, links disparate neighborhoods, and enables a new economy through vacant lots along the London Ave outfall canal. As integral as gills to a fish, the network of parks connect new celebratory public gathering spaces at the pump stations to stormwater pocket parks designed to inspire a fascination in the cypress swamps that will (re)define the ground for the future city. The project initiates an emotional connection between the infrastructural systems and the cultural legacy that desires to endure the impending flooding, subsidence, hurricanes, and sea level rise of New Orleans.

<description>A floodable landscape for the immigrants of the Veddel in Hamburg, Germany to grow + sell vegetables on a former customs interchange.

The Veddel lies at a critical juncture between the encroaching development from Hamburg + port and former agricultural lands + open spaces. At this juncture, Zupadyke responds to Hamburg’s ‘room for the river’, introducing an enlarged dyke partially covering the former customs buildings engaging the tidal flows of the river Elbe.

<description>In the 1890's Pittsburgh city engineers decided it would be more economical to combine sewer and storm water pipes. After the population mushroomed, the rivers became so full of waste they became stagnant. The current system handles the waste water during dry weather but when it rains (as little as one tenth of an inch) raw sewage dumps out of the 19th century outfalls directly into the rivers.

Gardez L'eau celebrates the composting toilet with colored toilet paper and dyed saw dust as a means for people to (re)discover their place in the nutrient cycle. project website

<description> A collaboration with Claire Hoch and Will Schlough as part of Bob Bingham's Environmental Sculpture course, Greenscape is the landscape component to the Carnegie Mellon 2007 entry to the Solar Decathlon, the Department of Energy solar powered house competition in Washington DC.

Inspired by terraced rice patties, the Greenscape is a vertically integrated water retention system. The 450 gallon tank collects rain water from the roof and irrigates the plants through a gravity fed drip-line. The water grows native species and food crops before it is filtered by the ground level wetland plants. The modular planting design allowed the fully grown plants to be installed temporarily for the competition in DC and permanently at Powdermill Nature reserve in Ligonier, PA.

<description>A lump of Velveeta™ cheese melts from the upper funnel into the blue dog poo mold below. Fans cool the liquid cheese into a solid. The solid is then flipped onto the conveyor belt, which eventually drops it into the final hopper which swings it back to the melting funnel to repeat.

Despite the engineering feat of a congruent melting point, eventually, all of the cheese ends up burnt on the edges of the hopper.
